VDOE Seeks Parents to Assist with Standards Setting

FROM THE VDOE:
Parent and guardian representation in our upcoming proficiency standard setting work is essential to ensuring Virginia students receive an excellent public education that prepares them for life and success after high school graduation. Providing a best-in-class education system for every Virginia student requires an increase in rigor, accountability, and support. Over the past three years, the Virginia Board of Education has prioritized raising expectations for Virginia students through the adoption of more rigorous Standards of Learning, and the Virginia Department of Education has re-designed summative assessments to more fully measure the rigor of the new academic content standards.

Virginia’s parents and guardians play a key role in supporting the implementation of Virginia’s assessment system. The Virginia Department of Education will be holding Mastery Level/Standard Setting to set new cut scores for Math and Reading Standards of Learning Assessments in June and is asking for parent and guardian participation. The Department needs our parents and guardians to bring their unique perspective on their children as students and provide guidance and recommendations for these new, more rigorous cut scores.

All standard setting meetings will be held at the Virginia Crossings Hotel and Conference Center, 1000 Virginia Center Parkway, Glen Allen, VA 20359, on the following dates:

Mathematics: June 9-11
Reading: June 11-13

Hotel and per diem will be covered by the Virginia Department of Education. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Additionally, there will be a virtual orientation meeting on May 19, 2025, to familiarize the selected members with the standard setting process. Parents and guardians that are selected to be part of the committee will receive additional information and link for the virtual meeting via email.
